ORTHOPEDIC REHABILITATION |
|
. |
|
Orthopedic injuries are those that involve
the muscles, bones and joints. Together, these structures are known as the
musculoskeletal system. Rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries such as
sprains, strains, fractures, dislocations or surgeries may entail
improving the amount of movement that is available to a joint (active and
passive range of motion), improving the activation of muscles that help
stabilize a joint, as well as stretching and strengthening the muscles to
maintain a balance of strength and flexibility around a joint. By using
appropriate stresses, scar and body tissues can be stimulated to heal in a
way that allows for return to normal movement patterns without the risk of
re-injury.

SPORTS REHABILITATION |
|
. |
|
Rehabilitation after sport injuries is
tailored to the particular needs of the sport. As the injured athlete
regains range of motion and strength, an exercise program is developed to
impose specific demands upon the injured or atrophied structures.
Progression is directed at return of body structures to a healthy
condition that will withstand a return to athletic activity.

SPINAL ALIGNMENT |
|
. |
|
A healthy back and neck require that all of
the vertebral bones are aligned well and the joints between them are
moving freely. Dysfunctions of the joints between the vertebrae or between
the vertebrae and ribs may be corrected through mobilization, muscle
energy techniques, or manipulation. Once alignment is achieved, proper
function can be maintained by retraining specific muscles to stabilize
appropriately with movement of the trunk or neck.

JOINT MOBILIZATION |
|
. |
|
Joint mobilization is a manual technique used to improve joint motion and
alignment. It is useful to relieve pain and stiffness, and improve the
overall function of the joint. Joint mobilization can be used on spinal
and extremity joints.

SOFT TISSUE MOBILIZATION |
|
(a.k.a. Fascial Release or
Fascial Mobilization)
Fascial
Mobilization is a technique used to develop
a well-balanced, mobile and symmetrical body within the skeletal
and soft-tissue systems.
The
fascial system consists of connective tissue sheaths that spread
throughout the body in a three-dimensional web. Because it is an
integral part of all anatomical structures, it plays a vital role in the
functioning of the body. Fascia is connective tissue and provides a
structural, protective and nutrition role in the support of the body
Restrictions
within the fascial system can contribute to pain and decrease in
function. These restrictions can be caused by postural imbalances,
trauma, surgery, inflammation, abnormal tension and pressure. Used alone
or in conjunction with other therapies, fascial mobilization decreases
pain, increases joint motion, and restores balance to the
musculoskeletal system.

MUSCLE ENERGY |
|
. |
|
Muscle
Energy is a direct, manual therapy technique used to improve spinal
alignment, increase range of motion, normalize muscle tone and decrease
pain. Developed by osteopath Fred Mitchell, Sr., this hands-on technique
improves the biomechanics of the spine and extremity joints. The client
has full control with this type of adjustment. After specific
positioning, the client contracts a specific muscle to realign the joint
involved. This creates a muscle balance around the joint that helps to
maintain the alignment.

NEURAL MOBILIZATION |
|
|
|
The
nervous system like the muscular system needs to be flexible and mobile
for normal movement. Injuries and surgeries affect the nervous systems
ability to “glide” properly throughout the body.
Neural mobilization is the technique used to restore the proper
pain free mobility of the nerves in the arms and legs. The therapist
guides the client’s extremity in a variety of very specific movement
patterns to allow the nerve to glide more freely.

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY |
|
. |
|
Craniosacral
therapy is a myofascial technique to normalize the mobility of the
deepest layers of connective tissue in the body. These connective
tissues surround the cranium, sacrum, spinal cord and nerves as they
exit the spine. CST is a gentle, light-touch method of evaluating and
improving the function of the nervous system in order to calm the
nervous system and decrease pain and stress symptoms from injury or
accident.
Developed
by John E. Upledger, D.O., O.M.M, this technique encourages the body’s
natural healing mechanisms to improve the operation of the central
nervous system, minimize the negative effects of stress, enhance health,
and strengthen resistance to disease. CST is beneficial in the treatment
of acute pain, headache, back and neck pain and numbness and tingling in
the arms and legs.

McCONNELL TAPING (Patellar Taping) |
|
. |
|
Mc
Connell Taping is a method of managing patella-femoral pain (pain around
the knee cap). It involves assessing the position of the patella both
statically and dynamically to determine which components need to be
corrected. Tape is then applied to improve the position of the patella.
The taping stretches the soft tissues and improves normal patella-femoral
alignment with functional activities.
Strengthening and retraining of the inner quadriceps muscle (VMO)
is also emphasized during treatment.

Many
injuries can be prevented by the use of good body mechanics.
By using proper body mechanics, the musculoskeletal system is
placed in its optimal alignment for the task at hand. Using proper body
mechanics can reduce abnormal joint stress, muscle strain, fatigue, and
reduce the risk of overuse/repetitive injuries. Body mechanics education
provides the client with the necessary tools to use their bodies in the
most efficient and effective manner. Good body mechanics are essential
in the prevention and treatments of back and neck pain.

BIKE FITTING |
| . |
|
Bike
fitting is geared to both the recreational and competitive rider who is
interested in a more comfortable and efficient ride. It also benefits
those suffering from injuries that would like to use bike riding as a
part of their rehabilitation. Bike fitting involves taking a personal
history of injury, riding style, riding concerns, and riding goals.
We then look at several key areas of fit including saddle height,
pedal alignment, trunk angle, and forward reach.
This is followed by a visual assessment of riding pattern.
Recommendations may then include an exercise/stretching program,
changes in riding habits and routines, adjustments to the bike, and a
visit to the local bike shop for any change of parts.
Bike fitting is a process of making changes and adjusting to
those changes. Therefore, follow up visits to an initial bike fitting
may be necessary.

INCONTINENCE PROGRAM |
|
. |
|
80%
of those with urinary incontinence can be cured or improved.
Weak pelvic floor muscles cannot produce or sustain a contraction
to inhibit the flow of urine and an incontinent episode can occur.
An alignment problem in the pelvis or spine can also contribute
to a muscle imbalance in the pelvic floor muscles.
Physical
Therapy and Feldenkrais®
techniques can be very successful in restoring the normal tone, strength
and endurance of the pelvic floor muscles through the use of
neuromuscular reeducation, biofeedback, joint mobilization/adjustments,
soft tissue work, relaxation techniques, postural training, etc.
Other important issues to address include diet, bladder and bowel
voiding habits, hormonal and behavioral issues and medical conditions.

HORSTMANN TECHNIQUE |
|
. |
|
Horstmann
Technique is a bodywork therapy consisting of Iliosacral Release, Arm
and Shoulder Release and Foot Release processes, developed in the mid
1990’s by Australian Natural Therapist Trish Trowbridge. Horstmann was
Trish’s birth name. After some twenty years of practicing a variety of
natural therapies, she discovered and clinically tested the Horstmann
Technique.
The
various release techniques involve holding specific points on a
person’s clothed body while gently maneuvering the legs or arms. For
the majority of people, this results in increased joint and muscle
flexibility as well as reduction in physical or structural problems.
Some experience release of problematic emotional patterns.
This
therapy can loosen tight muscles, remove physical and energetic
blockages, and leave you feeling relaxed. The Horstmann Technique uses
movement and passive stretching to improve circulation, freedom of
movement, and range of motion.

PILATES
(pronounced
Pih-láh-tees) |
|
. |
|
Pilates began
as a fitness and conditioning program developed by Joseph H. Pilates over
70 years ago. The method is now also used in the rehab community,
initially to rehab dancer's injuries, and now with all types of injuries.
The six principles of: concentration, balance, centering, strengthening,
elongation, and breathing are utilized as one learns to use only the
necessary muscle groups, while strengthening the "powerhouse" of the back
and abdominal area. Pilates is taught in two different formats, group or
individual. The mat exercise format is usually done in a group setting.
Individual sessions are often performed on special Pilates equipment.
The exercises begin with the use of breathing and abdominal exercises and
progress in difficulty to place increasingly more challenge on core
stability as the individual is ready to progress. Pilates has recently
gained in popularity due to the recognition for a need in core strength
and stability.
